Province of Manitoba to invest over $500,000 in new stroke-prevention initiatives.

WINNIPEG - The province is investing more than $560,000 to strengthen stroke-prevention measures across Manitoba including new regional stroke co-ordinators and an expanded provincewide public awareness campaign, Healthy Living Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced today.

2009 Tracking Heart Disease and Stroke in Canada

Ottawa, June 9, 2009
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) today released a new report that will provide Canadians with a greater understanding of cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it. Tracking Heart Disease and Stroke in Canada 2009 provides Canadians with information on major risk factors, on the social and economic impacts of these diseases, and on the rates of cardiovascular disease across the country.

PEI receives funding for stroke unit

Charlottetown, April 17, 2009
As unveiled in the Provincial budget, Government has introduced an Organized Stroke Care program to improve the outcomes for Islanders who have suffered a stroke. This program not only makes provision for a dedicated Acute Stroke Care Unit, it goes far beyond the stroke unit and provides a comprehensive prevention and treatment program for stroke survivors. The program will be phased in over four years.

Stroke guidelines to fill gaps in health care - Action required to save lives and prevent disability

OTTAWA, Dec 2, 2008
Ambulances should be sent to the closest hospital that can treat stroke, not the closest one on the map. Patients who have mini-strokes should not be sent home from hospital without a plan for appropriate follow-up care. And, stroke patients need to be checked for memory and thinking problems and not just physical disabilities.

Support for Integrated Stroke Services in Nova Scotia

Earlier this year, the Capital District Health Authority designated an acute neurology unit at the Halifax Infirmary site of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. People who have had a stroke comprise the majority of the patients on the unit; individuals affected by other disabling neurological disorders also benefit from coordinated interdisciplinary care that research has shown to improve outcomes after stroke.


Stroke units save lives and millions in hospital costs, new study finds

OTTAWA, Nov 19, 2008
Coordinated care also reduces rate of disability. Canada’s health-care system could save up to $240 million a year in inpatient hospital costs if all stroke patients were treated in organized ‘stroke units,’ according to a Calgary study published in the current issue of the journal Stroke.

Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to have Dr. Marsha Eustace back home.

Dr. Eustace completed her Stroke Fellowship in Halifax in September 2008 and is now working as a Stroke Neurologist with Eastern Health at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. The provincial Integrated Stroke Strategy Advisory Committee has benefited greatly from her expertise and looks forward to continuing to work together.

An exciting new professional education opportunity was launched this fall in the Eastern Health region of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Stroke Education Program for Registered Nurses has received a tremendously positive response. It is a 35-hour course comprised of classroom and on-the-job learning. Included are topics such as neuroanatomy, post-stroke complications, dysphasia, nursing assessment, depression and communication. For information contact: leona.lewis@easternhealth.ca
