Ongoing evaluation and reporting will
be key to the success of the CSS and all provincial
and territorial stroke strategies. Our goal is to
provide health practitioners and policy-makers with
the information they need to:
- effectively monitor the status
of stroke prevention and care,
- quantify needs throughout the
system,
- evaluate the effectiveness of
best practice implementation and practice changes,
- analyze policy decisions and
identify areas for investment, and
- provide data for research purposes
and clinical trials.
The CSS Information and Evaluation Working
Group has produced a standardized set of evidence-based
performance indicators focused on patient-level processes
and outcomes for adaptation and implementation by
provinces, territories and regions. These indicators
were reviewed and endorsed at a National Consensus
Conference held in Montreal, Quebec in September 2005
with experts attending from across the country. By
focusing data collection and reporting against a standardized
set of evidence-based performance indicators, we will
be able to accurate assess where we are today and
measure improvements over time.
Given the challenges of data collection
and reporting, the Core Performance Indicators have
been deliberately kept to a realistic and manageable
number. They were selected based on available evidence
to support their use and their relevance to driving
change in stroke care delivery.
